The movie begins in 1927 and we meet the deaf girl Rose. Rose runs away to New York to find a movie star that she admire. Then we jump to 1977 and meet Ben. He loses his hearing after a lightning strike, even he runs away to New York. Ben wants to find his unknown father. The children's stories are woven together in a fantastic fairy tale, and Roger Wilson on Sweden's radio P1 thinks that this is "A magical movie story for both the younger crowd and the little older cineasts". The film is based on the author Brian Selznick's book with the same name, and Selznick also wrote the film script.
