In the western USA in the 1860s the Vivienne (Vicky Krieps) starts a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen). They travel to his modest Nevada home, where they build a life together. But the Civil War separates them, and Vivienne is left alone in a town of corrupt politicians and unscrupulous idividuals. The film is a portrait of an independent woman determined to defend herself in a rough world dominated by ruthless men.
