The cowboy Lefty Browns (Bill Pullman) best friend Eddie Johnson, who has just been elected to Senator in Montana, is shot in the back when they are out riding horses. Full of grief and anger, Lefty swears to revenge the cold-blooded murder and rides out in the vast and desolate Montana plains to track down the outlaws, but instead, he becomes suspected of the murder.
