Nick Holland, a newly graduated police officer in Los Angeles, is about to go on his first night shift. He is paired with an experienced veteran named Ray Mandel, and together they take on the streets of the city. But their different personalities clash immediately as Nick thinks he can make a difference while Ray has completely given up on that and tends to solve most situations with force. During the shift they must deal with everything from car fires to bank robbers who murdered police officers to the kidnapping of a little girl which leads to them having to fight against the clock to save her.
