The teenager Astrid (Alison Lohman) journeys through a series of foster homes when her mother Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) is convicted of murdering her boyfriend and goes to prison. With the foster families, Astrid is constantly forced to adapt to others and put herself and her own interests aside, and in addition, her mother wants to be the one in the center of Astrid's life.
