The little girl Moonee lives in a shabby motel in Florida with her single mother Halley. Even though they don’t have so much money, Moonee is a playful and vibrant girl spreading a lot of fun to the other children in the area, something that bothers and charms the motel's manager Bobby (played by Willem Dafoe). Fredrik Sahlin at Kulturnyheterna thinks that the movie offers "brilliant acting and environmental drawing of American success with a small budget - with great integrity". Willem Dafoe was nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
