After losing her parents during the Second World War, Anna grows up in a monastery. She is preparing for life as a nun. The Mother Abbess insists that she contacts her only living relative and gets to know Wanda, a progressive intellectual who works as a judge and in secret tries to wipe out painful memories with alcohol and sex. Together they go on a journey through the Polish landscape to explore what happened to Jewish Idas, now Annas, family during the war. The Oscar and Guldbaggen nominated drama Ida takes place in Poland in the 1960s.
