Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) loses her parents early and grows up with her aunt and uncle. When her uncle dies, her aunt puts Jane in a school for poor girls, despite the promise she gave her husband to always take care of the girl. As an adult, Jane starts working as a governess to Adele at Thornfield. Jane meets the man of the house, the strange and demanding Mr. Rochester (Michael Fassbender), and she is fascinated by him. They fall in love, but Jane leaves him to find a new and independent life when she learns that Rochester is already married. Anna Hellsten in Sydsvenskan writes that the director Fukunaga "succeeded in something as rare as being faithful to the original without being suffocated by its weight".
