Cries and Whispers

15 yrs 91 minutes 1972 7.9

Cries and Whispers is a family drama that takes place in a mansion sometime in the late 19th century. Karin and Maria watches over their sister Agnes's death bed with the faithful servant Anna. Through flashbacks, the lives of both sisters are portrayed, filled with lies, betrayal, coldness, self-hatred, guilt and forbidden love. Agnes’s dramatic fight against death arouses nothing but fear and reluctance with the sisters. They distract each other from her when she grabs for their hands. It's finally Anna who takes the dying Agnes to her arms when her life is at an end. But when the sisters leave, Anna reads Agnes's diary where she finds a world filled with happiness and gratitude over life. The film has won countless awards, including at the Oscars, the Cannes Film Festival and the Guldbagge Awards.
