Clara is a retired music critic and a widow, but she is also the last apartment owner in Aquarius, a two-story apartment complex from the 1940s in the beautiful upper-class beachfront resort in Recife. All her neighbors have been forced to sell their homes to a company that has other plans for the area. Clara has decided that she’d rather die than giving up her apartment, leading to a battle with the company. Their fight, however, provide her with some light in her everyday life and makes her reminisce on life, love and music. In SvD, Jan Lumholdt gives the film the highest rating and writes “Aquarius is a refined, passionate film that moves between light joy, blue melancholy and, when needed, black anger”. Aquarius was nominated to Palm d’Or in Cannes in 2016.
