When Gitl and her son arrives in New York, husband Yankel is already assimilated into the American culture. He has taken the name Jake, and put the daily Jewish routines behind him. But settling into her new life is more difficult for Gitl. When a neighbor tells Gitl that Jake is cheating on her with another woman, her patience runs out. Gitl can no longer trust her husband in the new world.
Hester Street is a romantic drama by Joan Micklin Silver, who has been celebrated for her detailed rendering of the Jewish society in Manhattan around the turn of the century. Carol Kane (Annie Hall, Dog Day Afternoon) was nominated for an Oscar for her part.
