12-year-old Mylia's family has just moved to the countryside outside Quebec and she is starting at a new school. Withdrawn and insecure, she tries to fit in with the students and soon she finds a friend in the older and outgoing Jacinthe, who introduces Mylia to all the temptations of teenage life. She also meets Jimmy, a native boy who lives in the nearby reservation. Between the outgoing and party focused Jacinthe and the more grounded and confident Jimmy, Mylia is torn between a strong desire to fit in and a need to be herself. A colony is a French-Canadian story about identity and becoming a teenager in a complex world. The film won a Crystal Bear at the International Film Festival in Berlin.
