Woman in the Dunes
The entomologist Jumpei Niki has traveled from Tokyo to a small fishing village to study the insects living there and is stranded in the village when he misses the last bus back. The villagers insist on arranging somewhere for him to sleep, and they show him to a house at the bottom of a deep sand pit where a young widow live. The next morning, the rope ladder he used to climb down is not there, and the villagers inform him that he must stay there and help the young woman with her life mission; to keep the sand from burying her house. The film is based on the celebrated novel by Kobo Abe, who also wrote the script. It was nominated for two Oscar and won the jury's special prize in Cannes in 1964.
