In May 1940, France was invaded by the Nazis. Millions of people break up from their homes and go out on the roads to seek a safer residence. For the inhabitants of a small town near the English Channel, the plan is to try to reach the coast. One of the refugees is the young teacher Suzanne, whose casts an extra careful eye over the motherless German boy Max. When the war breaks out his father is arrested. Now his father is on a search through the country to try to find his son - who can be anywhere among all the million refugees.
