Ernest Cole: Lost and Found
In the 1950s, Ernest Cole worked as a photographer in his home country of South Africa, and gradually became very critical of the apartheid system. This led to him being forced to flee in the 1960s, ending up in New York with a suitcase full of negatives.
Through several parallel stories, we get a nuanced insight into the photographer's life. However, all the stories ultimately lead to the same place - a vault in Stockholm.
Director Raoul Peck gives Cole's work and story a new life through a clever use of Cole's own images and stills from 1960s and 70s New York. The result is a mix of documented storytelling and a personal tribute to one of South Africa's lost voices.
