The best years of a life
We first met the romantic couple Anne (Anouk Aimee) and Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant) in Claude Lelouchs’ 1966 classic A Man and a Woman. The film was hailed as part of the new French wave and was awarded both an Oscar and the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In The Best Years of a Life, Lelouch returns to the story of the couple more than fifty years later. Jean-Louis is now an old man who is about to disappear into his dementia. But when his son discovers that the memories of Anne seem to bring him back, he seeks out his father's former love.
