French astronaut Sarah (Eva Green) has been selected for a space program to prepare future expeditions to Mars. She will spend a year at the International Space Station, which means she will be away from her eight-year-old daughter. Sarah struggles to balance the role of pioneering astronaut and woman in a male-dominated environment with all the emotional challenges of parenthood. Karoline Eriksson at Svenska Dagbladet writes "It has been a long time since I saw such a strong and moving depiction of parenting. [Director] Alice Winocour gets it just right in the complex cocktail of love, guilt, worry and own needs of what it means to have children". Proxima was celebrated at several major film festivals and won prizes in Toronto and San Sebastián.
