After arriving late at the court hearing on the divorce from her husband, the numb and apathetic Wanda loses custody of the children and aimlessly sets out on a journey through the rust belt of Pennsylvania. Without a job or home of her own, she is completely left in the hands of the men she encounters. When she meets the robber Norman Dennis, she follows him even though he is abusive both mentally and physically. Barbara Loden, who wrote and directed, stars in this independent film which was acclaimed at the Venice International Film Festival where it was named Best Foreign Film in 1970.
