The war in Syria has been documented and reported from many angles, mostly from the outside and with the distanced view of a journalist. For Sama is a story from inside a normal life lived parallel to the unimaginable horrors of war. Waad Al-Khateab is studying at the University of Aleppo when she starts filming her everyday life. The camera remains turned on for years to come, and we get to see her live her life, fall in love, get married and give birth to her daughter Sama. All while the war continues to rage around her. The film won a BAFTA for Best Documentary and was also nominated for an Oscar in the same category.
