Capernaum

11 yrs 121 minutes 2018 8.4

When twelve-year-old Zain's younger sister is given away to get married, he had enough of the hard life and the power that the adults have over the children and escapes. His dream is to find a dignified existence somewhere else, but as a street child on Beirut's streets, young Zain is forced to use all his courage and ingenuity to cope with the day. When he meets the nice cleaner Rahil, he gets to stay at her house if he agrees to take care of her son Yonas, but suddenly one day Rahil disappears, and the two boys are now alone in a world where the children are the most vulnerable. In Dagens Nyheter, Kerstin Gezelius writes about the director: "Labaki has somehow managed to create a layer-by-layer effect of the rich material that gives Capernaum a dizzying depth, a suction right into a place which in turn opens up towards the rest of the world ". The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film 2018.
