Already at the age of 10, Nic Sheff (played by Timothée Chalamet who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance) starts drinking. He continues with marijuana until he finds his favorite drug, crystal meth. Although he is good at hiding his abuse and has top grades, his parents eventually begin to suspect that something is wrong. He is admitted to rehab but falls back into his drug abuse every time. When he is admitted to Berkeley against all odds, he quit so he can live his life on the street instead. Dad David (Steve Carell), who always seemed to be a good father with a good relationship with his son, can only watch as Nic chooses the drugs in front of him. Beautiful Boy is based on Nics and his father David Sheffs, autobiographies. Jane Magnusson calls the film "incomparable arrest" in DN.
