Children of Hiroshima
Schoolteacher Takako returns to her hometown of Hiroshima just a few years after the atomic bomb that devastated large parts of the city. Both her parents died during the bombings and everyone she knows in the city has been affected in different ways. Her friend Natsue has become infertile as a result of the radioactivity, and a friend of her father is now blind and forced to beg on the streets. Takako finds out that he has a grandson, Taro, who lives in an orphanage since the old man is unable to take care of him. She decides to try to help them. Director Kaneto Shindo, born and raised in Hiroshima, was nominated for the Grand Prize of the Festival in Cannes in 1953.
