The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
The umbrellas in Cherbourg is a bittersweet classic musical who touched several romantic hearts since its premiere in 1964. All dialogue in the film is performed by singing. Catherine Deneuve got her breakthrough in her prestigious role as the young and in love Genevieve. The subject of her love is Guy, a young mechanic with dreams about his own gas station. But the reality forces itself on them when Guy must go to the war in Algeria. When Genevieve is separate from Guy she finds out that she is pregnant. Genevieve waits for Guy as long as she can, but in the end, she is forced to marry another man. The film was awarded the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964.
