Madame Bovary
Emma Bovary in Gustave Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary from 1856 is one of the world's best known female characters. Emma marries the doctor Charles Bovary, but soon finds life with him boring. Her war on sadness begins with childish dreams of passion and fortune but soon turns into a vicious spiral of lies, credits, and increasingly daring affairs. In his review in The New York Times, A. O. Scott believes that Mia Wasikowska again shows proof of her "special gift for making her characters feel at once bracingly modern and entirely of their own time.”
