At the very first Oscars gala in 1928, Charlie Chaplin received a special award for "versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing" in reference to The Circus. In the film, Chaplin's “The Tramp” is chased as usual by the police and accidentally enters a circus during the ongoing performance. The crowd is delighted as they think the hunt is part of the act and the circus director hires the tramp on the spot.
