A story about a difficult and long-lasting border conflict and a touching drama about a Chinese-born Brit who won gold medals, and who thereafter returned to his birth country just before it was about to be attacked, are two of this week's strong newly released films on Viddla.
They have a Joint Security Area, South and North Korea. But when two North Koreans are found shot there, extra concern arises and neutral investigators must be brought in to get to the bottom of the case. Director Park Chan-wook does a masterful job of exploring friendship on and across national borders and in conflict, in this film that serves as a social commentary on the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
A real samurai from the Middle Ages is struck by lightning. He wakes up many years later, in the middle of a film set making a movie about samurais. This Japanese comedy is a low-budget film, but became very popular when it was released, and has won awards in Japan. A Samurai in Time premiered in 2023, and has a 12-year age limit.
We are in northern Finland, the year is 1984. A Soviet missile turns the small village into the focus of global politics in a subtly humorous dramatic comedy marked by darkness. A mother of young children gets a job as a reporter at the local newspaper and must go out on assignments when a violent explosion shakes the village. The film Ohjus/The Missile from 2024 has won awards, including for best screenplay.
On the Wings of Eagles is a drama about the gold medalist Eric Liddell, who was born in China but competed for Great Britain and lived in Scotland. After the 1924 Olympics, he returned home to China as the country was in the process of being occupied by Japan. This powerful story is about his final years and serves as a sort of continuation of his story in the 1981 Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire.
Anne-Cath. Vestly's heartwarming series about grandma and the eight children is a favorite of many childhoods. In Grandma and the Eight Children in the Forest we meet Maren, Martin, Marte, Mads, Mona, Milly, Mina, and Morten the youngest, their parents, and Grandma, in a tiny, cozy red house in the forest. Grandma constantly saves the day in a house where anything can happen.
Julianne Moore plays the lead role in the Oscar-nominated film Far from Heaven, a period drama from the 1950s. We follow a stressed housewife with marital problems while society begins to crack as Cathy catches her husband in the act with another man.
