Choderlos de Laclo's 18th century novel Dangerous Liaisons with ingredients such as jealousy, betting and extramarital affairs has been adapt for the screen several times over the years, most recently in 1999 with the title Cruel Intentions. In this 1989 version directed by Milos Forman, Colin Firth and Annette Bening take on the roles of the 18th-century French aristocrats Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, in which the Marquise makes a bet that Valmont will not succeed in seducing a married woman. If he manages this, he can wish the Marquis for what he wants, but in the middle of the process something happens that none of them expected, Valmont falls in love for real ... The film was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA in the category Best Costumes and won one César in the same category.
