Triple Oscar-winning costume drama Howards End tells the story of two English families in the early 1900s. The Wilcox family see themselves as aristocrats and value tradition and their financial assets highly, while the Schlegel family looks to the future and are humanists and philanthropists. When one of the women from the Wilcox family lies on her deathbed, she makes an impulse decision and bequeaths her idyllic estate Howard's End to Margaret, one of the sisters in the Schlegel family. The film won a large number of prestigious awards and Emma Thompson, who plays Margaret Schlegel, was awarded an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance.
