The Great Dictator

Allowed 125 minutes 1940 8.5

The USA had not yet joined World War II when Chaplin in his comedy The Great Dictator showed his position regarding Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. Chaplin plays two roles, partly the Hitlerlike Adenoid Hynkel and, secondly, the Jewish barber who is Adenoid Hynkel's body double. Gags and comic elements are abound and, as a balance, a ghetto where terror prevails is also portrayed. Unforgettable scenes include Hynkel's dance with an earthglobe, the crazy flight ride upside down as well as Hynkel's and a Mussolini-like Jack Oakie's hairdressing competition. In this movie outstanding comedy and passionate film-making are entwined. The Great Dictator was Chaplin's first talking film, and it became five-fold Oscar-nominated and banned in the countries occupied by Germany.
